Why the name Osmia
The story of the name begins years before the app — with a drawing, a mechanism from nature, and a small solitary bee that turned out to hold the whole philosophy
Already years ago, the idea that today is called Osmia was a presence in my mind. I was playing around, drawing a logo that could show the project’s essence — and despite awful drawing skills, this beautiful logo was made. I have carried it with me for years, even while traveling.
The logo symbolizes an upward spiral coming into infinity — shown holistically, as oneness, in the shape of a bee.
I kept drawing parallels between the effect of the app and the word osmosis: the passive movement of a substance across a membrane toward equilibrium — no force, just gradual transfer until balance.
Suddenly, almost magically, the name Osmia was discovered — perfectly merging the mechanism of osmosis and the logo of the bee.
The Osmia is a special, quite extraordinary type of bee. A solitary species: each female is her own queen — she builds her own nest, makes her own decisions. And still they gather, and build their nests side by side.
Two hundred and fifty Osmia bees match the pollination power of ninety thousand honeybees. The biology mirrors the project: individually sovereign, collectively extraordinary — and pound for pound the most effective pollinator there is.
Each Osmia bee has its own completely unique, personal scent — and finds its way home by it. The Osmia bee is the perfect symbol of our philosophy.
